INSPIRED: Janelle Monae

February 25, 2015 | D&L

From the moment Janelle Monae stepped onto the music scene, she has been nothing but original and has stayed true to herself.

As an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, composer and record producer, Janelle has owned every song she has ever performed and every lyric she has ever written, because behind the music, there is a strong family background that she experienced to work to where she is today.

Born in Kansas City, Janelle knew she wanted to be a performer from a very young age and after being introduced to Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs – from Outkast’s Big Boi – and impressing him with her look and sound, she was instantly signed to Bad Boy Records following her first EP release, titled The Audition.

One thing that stood out to Puffy was her unique look, her dancing and the vibe she created with her music. Whether she’s singing about a cause she strongly believes in, or giving you the feeling to get up and dance, Janelle will continue to rock her suited look whilst she does it, paying homage to her parents who worked in uniform.

But the reason we love Janelle is because she brings something different to the music world. When you play her music it’s like reminiscing on past jazz elements mixed with blues and a glance into the future. Her addictive sound is timeless and she really is an artist who we believe will be around for a very long time.
