L’ART’s Weekend Anthem With DJ Spex

February 19, 2016 | D&L

It’s that time once again where the end of the week brings your weekend anthem, but this time, we have a L’ART first.

With Valentine’s Day kick starting the week, DJ Spex released the sixth edition of his SweetBoi Mode mixtape (SweetBoi Mode 6/ #SBM6), just in time for the seasonal celebration of love. The Valentine’s series has been making the rounds all week on social media and before having a listen ourselves, we could tell it was going to be a good listen just by seeing the track list alone.

Catering for the RnB lovers out there, Spex well and truly brings the slow jams vibe that many music listeners of today so desperately miss. Often looking to the 90’s for that classic throwback feel (we’re definitely part of that crowd), it often feels that the RnB scene isn’t what it used to be. Don’t get us wrong however, there are certainly artists of today who are doing their thing for the genre, and the features on the track list prove it.

From Ne-Yo’s ‘Religious’, Bryson Tiller’s ‘Don’t’, Eric Bellinger’s ‘Kiss Goodnight’ and August Alsina’s ‘Kissin’ On My Tattoos’, to 702’s ‘Beep Me 911’, Keyshia Cole’s ‘I Remember’, B2K’s ‘Gots Ta Be’ and Musiq Soulchild’s ‘Soulstar’; it’s the perfect balance of new school with the old.

Now when you think of your favourite slow jams, or your throwback radio playlists, it’s possible you often find the same songs appearing on rotation, so it’s refreshing to hear a different selection of new tracks and back of the stacks on this latest release. Of course we all have our favourite slow jam selection with the likes of Jodeci and Boyz II Men springing to mind, but with other mixtape features including Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Diggy and Ty Dolla $ign, we’re all for this new age blend.

Wanting to capture the classic feel that he feels the scene used to produce, Spex returned to the project that has had his listeners wanting more since volume one’s release and the five that have followed in the past six years.

“I really searched for the right selection to cater for the original fans and to also welcome some new ones,” he said. Has he captured the slow jam feel for you? Get your listen in here today.

Have a good one guys.
