November 26, 2012 | Daniella & Letisha Jones-EllisThe BET Soul Train Awards 2012 took place last night at Planet Hollywood and as stars from the world of music, film, sports and TV made their way to the Las Vegas venue, it was due to be a great celebratory night.
Keeping things flowing throughout the night with his loved character and light humour was comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer and with Don Cornelius passing away earlier this year, it was inevitable that the pioneering host was going to be honoured and remembered for being the face and creator of such a historic and monumental show.
Tony Cornelius spoke about his father, a speech which was then followed by choreographer Fatima Robinson’s dance routines, where she focused on the dance eras of decades gone by, including elements of 90s Jack Swing and the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award went to male rnb/soul group New Edition. Fans of the 80s and 90s will remember them for their great voices from both their young and older days, as well as their moves and hits as a group, solo careers and other projects, which saw Johnny Gill later join the group. Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant went on to release solo material and members Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Michael Bivins also formed the trio Bel Biv Devoe.
We won’t spoil the remainder of the winners list for those who are yet to see the awards ceremony, but what we will say is the rnb, hip and soul albums that were the medleys to your Summer, will definitely see the talented artists get their well deserved dues.
UK viewers can catch the show Saturday night on December 1st.
Here’s New Edition with the single ‘Candy Girl’ from their first studio album in 1983, and their last release in 2004 with ‘Hot 2Nite’.
