October 2, 2012 | Daniella & Letisha Jones-Elliseptember 29th saw those involved in the hip-hop game gather at Atlanta’s Civic Centre to celebrate the annual BET (Black Entertainment Television) Hip-Hop Awards 2012.
Now in its seventh year running, the night is often attended by celebrities who love the genre, dedicated fans and of course the favoured and timeless rappers of today and yesterday.
Who could forget the memorable speech that LL Cool J spoke last year as he received his ‘I Am Hip-Hop’ icon award, which is the ceremony’s equivalent to a lifetime achievement? This year’s well deserved recipient was Rakim and he delivered an acceptance speech that was just as touching.
Performances on the night included T.I., Rick Ross, Diddy and an opening from Wiz Khalifa. A tribute to the late Chris Lighty who was valued for platforming and working magic behind the careers of many, also saw Missy Elliott return to the stage along with others in rememberance of the music producer.
Hosted by Mike Epps and with the loved inclusion of the usual hip-hop freestyle ciphers, once again 2012 was shown to be a great year for hip-hop.
Check out the highlights from the night here. US viewers can catch the ceremony on screen October 9th and the UK to follow shortly afterwards.
Here’s the hip-hop icon winner Rakim with Eric B on the track ‘Paid In Full’.
