REVIEW: Eric Benet releases his self titled album

October 26, 2017 | D&L

Four-time Grammy-nominated R&B singer, Eric Benet is set to release his eighth studio album, the eponymous “Eric Benét” on 27 October via BMG.

The 13-track album, crafted with Benet’s longtime collaborator Demonte, showcases the depth of the singer/songwriter’s music scope.

Starting things off with, ‘Can’t Tell U Enough’, this energetic track with melodious vocals and vibrant horns, is all about re-igniting the fire in a relationship.

Contrary to this, the single, ‘Sunshine’ is a pure R&B track, that reflects the loss of chemistry in a relationship. The single (which has already begun climbing radio charts) has sparked a remix version featuring Tamia, which makes an appearance on the album at No 13.

Next, with an unadulterated sensuality, is ‘Insane’, a slow jam with an ‘80s vibe.

‘Cold Trigger’, with its funky and edgy party jam vibes is next, with the album then veering off into a multitude of brilliant collaborations, with rap icon MC Lyte (‘Holding On’) and a versatile Afro- Cuban infused number that enlists the help of famed horn player, Arturo Sandoval (‘Run to Me’).

Providing a balance to the up-beat songs, are sedate ballads like ‘Home’ and ‘Fun and Games’. Further slowing the tempo are tracks, ‘Floating through Time’ and ‘That Day’, which are soothing and pleasant, but stagnate an otherwise up-tempo album, with its slow pace.

‘Never Be the Same (Luna’s Lullaby)’, reflects Benet’s dedication to his daughters- mainly his youngest in this case, moving on to the real-talk track, ‘Broke Beat and Busted’. With a solemn piano in the background, this final track appears before the remixed version of ‘Sunshine’.

With his smooth vocals, and authentic artistry, the album is an aural treat for every true R&B fan out there

Eric has been touring recently on a 16-date tour starting with fellow contemporary R&B standard-bearers Anthony Hamilton and Lalah Hathaway. Check him out at venues below.
