July 3, 2017 | D&LSpike Lee really needs no introduction.
With many movies under his belt where he has directed, produced, written and occasionally acted, the American talent is now working on a Netflix series.
That’s right, the legendary director is working on a remake of his very own 1986 movie release, She’s Gotta Have It, by creating a brand new TV series. Now, if you’re a fan of the movie, you will know how the story unfolds, but if you are yet to watch it, you have a lot to look forward to.
The new series will be something that die-hard fans and a new generation of fans will be able to tune in to as Lee has worked on building more substance to each character’s lives.
“She’s Gotta Have It, the Netflix Original Series from Academy Award Nominated director Spike Lee is a 10-episode contemporary update of Lee’s 1986 revolutionary debut film. Starring DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) in the central role of Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos”.
With a storyline that still relates to people today, you may be surprised to hear that it wasn’t actually Lee’s idea to ‘re-birth- this new series.
Lee said: “We are getting an opportunity to revisit these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant garde three decades later. With all that said, it was my wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, producer in her own right, who had the vision to take my film from the big screen and turn it into an episodic series. It had not occurred to me at all. Tonya saw it plain as day. I didn’t.”
So it looks like his wife was onto a winner, right?
We can’t say there has been a project that Spike Lee has created that doesn’t get people talking, so we’re definitely looking forward to what this new venture will bring.
A November release date is currently in the works.
