Throwback Thursday: TLC

February 26, 2015 | D&L

With this week marking the 10th anniversary of TLC’s Fanmail album, we just had to dedicate this week’s throwback Thursday to one of the greatest female singing groups to ever grace this earth.

Collectively, Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas and Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes broke barriers and helped pave the way for outspoken and creative females in the music world. Whilst they also looked up to stars who contributed to women becoming successful singers and touching upon ‘shy’ subjects – including Salt N Pepa – TLC continued the tradition and spoke up for what was on the minds of young women in their young adult years.

As they individually grew older as artists, their music grew with them, as they took comfort from their own life experiences to share sensitive subjects with their fans, as well as giving you feel-good music to dance along to.

Today, Fanmail is still recognised as one of the best R&B albums to date. With hits including ‘Unpretty’, ‘Dear Lie’, ‘Automatic’ and ‘I Miss You So Much’, there’s not one track you want to skip when listening to this album, especially the entertaining interlude before you hear the strings on ‘No Scrubs’.

This album alone won the girls Grammy awards for ‘Best R&B Album’ and ‘No Scrubs’ won them ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals’ and ‘Best R&B song’. At the time of the 90’s, this album was a real breakthrough into the future sound of music, as well as the futuristic theme the girls used in their ‘No Scrubs’ video.

After a five year hiatus and filing for bankruptcy after being unfairly misled, this was an amazing ‘comeback’ for TLC and they certainly never forgot about their fans, even dedicating their album title to them.

Now, as T-Boz and Chilli prepare to go on tour (alongside Nelly and NKOTB) and produce their final studio album – after receiving more than $430,000 through their Kickstarter fund by you and the stars – TLC’s name will go down in history.

With a throwback from the Fanmail album, here is one of our favourites, ‘Dear Lie’.
