May 7, 2015 | D&LA few weeks before Yasiin Bey AKA Mos Def hits the stage alongside Talib Kweli at New Look Wireless opening night, he will be playing J Dilla at Indigo O2 on June 11th!
Now, when you hear that he’s going to play J Dilla, it can be perceived in many ways, but J Dilla fans will be pleased to hear that the successful musician will be performing classic tracks from the back catalogue of the legendary producer.
Described as a once in a lifetime opportunity, fans of Mos Def and J Dilla can collectively come together to enjoy one night of this new project that pays tribute to the late Jay Dee and his long-standing legacy.
The Hip-Hop artist will be rapping over some of J Dilla’s hottest beats and as he is still seen as one of Hip-Hop’s most influential and respected figures, this night will certainly be one to remember.
‘The ascendancy of J Dilla in the 90’s and 00’s was astronomical. J Dilla’s talent as a producer led him to working with the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Madlib, D’Angelo, MF DOOM, The Pharcyde and of course, Mos Def himself.
‘Tragically James D. Yancey passed away in 2006, but his influence on the Hip-Hop world is felt still from the impact of his unique beats and a host of posthumous releases.’
As Mos Def had the pleasure of working with J Dilla himself and bringing some of his incredible work to light after his death (examples of this can be heard on ‘History’ and ‘Sunshine Screwface’), it’s no wonder he was seen as the ideal candidate for the job.
Tickets to witness this celebration of ‘an extraordinary musician’s life’ are now on sale.
Here is a throwback, a collaborative project of the two, with the J Dilla produced track, ‘History’.
