What Does MC Lyte’s Return Mean For Hip Hop?

April 13, 2015 | D&L

Legendary Hip Hop artist, MC Lyte, will be releasing her first album since 2003.

Making reference to the 90’s era in which she became one of the genre’s ground breaking artists, the album, aptly titled Legend, will drop April 18th and will be available to purchase in limited edition vinyl format for one day only.

Including the singles ‘Check’ and ‘Ball’ featuring Lil Mama, the female rapper represents a timeless talent, as her signature voice and ability to represent for the ladies has seen many relate to her throughout the decades, with her admirers even including fellow music artists, Queen Latifah and Brandy.

Although having been absent from the new music scene as of late, Lyte has remained close to it all by emceeing at BET’s music awards and received Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as opening a boutique, been a DJ, been a guest speaker and serves as the first black President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Recording Academy, for the Grammy organisation.

At a time where the status of rap music and its creative side continues to be questioned, her return to the music couldn’t have come at a better time.
